The Yadkin Family YMCA on April 20 will celebrate YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day with a free community event that encourages kids in the Yadkin County area to get moving and learning, and families living healthier.

Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, takes place at 1,900 YMCA locations and kick-starts healthier behaviors now and throughout the summer, a critical out-of-school time for children’s health.

According to the latest findings of the YMCA’s Family Health Snapshot – a survey of parents that gauges their children’s activity levels during the school year – only 19 percent of children get 60 minutes of physical activity, only 17 percent read books for fun and only 12 percent eat at least eight fruits and vegetables daily.

“At the Y, we know parents struggle to keep their kids physically and intellectually active every day,” said Tres Fordham, executive director of the Yadkin Family YMCA. “We want to help ensure fewer kids are at risk of childhood obesity and more kids excel in school. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day will get kids moving and learning while also helping families get a jump on creating a healthier summer, and ultimately a healthier future.”

On April 20, YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day is intended to help parents begin thinking early about what their kids need to grow and achieve all summer long.

The Yadkin Family YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day takes place at the Y from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local vendors will share info for kids and the whole family, including local dance studios, private schools, day cares, pediatricians, pediatric dentist and so on.

The Y will host special activities like a jump rope competition, hula hooping, kids yoga, dancing, and nature walks. There is more going on throughout the week. Check out the schedule here:

April 21: Pre-School PE with local pre-schools to come in to the Y for a free pre-school P.E. activity.

Throughout the week: Evening nutrition sessions open for families.

Throughout the week: Local elementary schools will visit the Y for swimming or other activities.

April 26 from 9 a.m.-1 pm: Active Older Adult Health and Information Expo

The April joining special is just in time to get ready for summer. Join the Y for just a $19 joining fee for two weeks only April 7 through 20.

The event is free and open to the community. For more information or to get involved, please contact Becky at b.serine@ymcanwnc.org or 336 679 7962.
