Andrew L. Mackie, chair of the cemetery committee for the Yadkin County Historical Society, will present a program on abandoned cemeteries on March 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Yadkin County Senior Center located at 207 E. Hemlock St. in Yadkinville.
Mackie will review the recent resolution approved by the Yadkin County Board of Commissioners that declares March as Abandoned Cemeteries Awareness Month. It encourages families, property owners, and volunteers to preserve these graveyards, which are an important part of Yadkin County’s cultural heritage.
He will also review the committee’s progress to study Yadkin County’s 600 abandoned cemeteries and publish a revised list of the information contained in them.
The program is free and open to the public.
