UNIONVILLE - Five Yadkin County grapplers punched their ticket to the 2A State Wrestling Championships this week at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Starmount’s Sergio Sarinana, Michael Wood and Garrett Stokes will join Forbush’s Storm Long and Dylan Edwards at the state championships Thursday in Greensboro.

The five wrestlers qualified with top-four performances at the 2A Midwest Regional Saturday in Unionville.

Sarinana placed fourth in the 152-pound bracket as the No. 5 seed for the Rams.

After winning his two first matches, Sarinana dropped a 4-0 decision to top-seeded Austin Collins from North Surry. The senior rebounded with a 7-3 win in the consolation bracket before falling to Wilkes Central’s Dylan Adams in the third-place match.

Wood followed with a fourth-place finish at 182 pounds despite entering the regional as the second seed.

The senior opened with two dominating wins before dropping a tough 12-9 decision to No. 3 Levi Slate from North Surry. Wood bounced back with a pin in the consolation semifinals before losing a second-straight medal match to an Ashe County wrestler to finish fourth.

Stokes rounded out Starmount’s qualifiers with an unlikely and thrilling run to the silver medal at Saturday’s regional.

The sophomore came into the tournament unranked and upset three-straight wrestlers to advance to the finals. Stokes battled past the sixth, third and second seeds to punch his ticket.

In the finals, Stokes’ luck ran out and fell to top-ranked Jacob Comer from Central Davidson.

Long became the first of two Falcons to qualify for states with a fourth-place finish in the 126 pound bracket.

The junior recorded back-to-back pins in his first matches to reach the semifinals. In the match, Long lost a heart-breaker to top-seeded Cody Walker from Cuthbertson to head to the consolation bracket.

Long won his third match of the day with another pin, but dropped a tough 2-0 decision in the consolation finals to finish fourth.

Edwards rounded out Yadkin County’s qualifiers when he placed fourth at 195 pounds.

The junior advanced to the semifinals before falling to third-seeded Bryce Braswell (Piedmont) 4-3 to drop to the consolation bracket. Edwards punched his ticket to the medal match with a win in the semis, but lost 8-5 to finish fourth.

The five wrestlers will start their run at an individual championship Thursday night at the Greensboro Coliseum. Wrestlimg opens at 6:30 p.m.
