Lady Falcons let two late leads slip away
EAST BEND - After winning five-straight Mountain Valley Conference games to open the new year, the Lady Falcons have suddenly hit a skid.
Forbush let two late leads slip away in its last two games, falling to East Wilkes 36-34 Thursday night and West Wilkes 45-40 Monday night.
Against the Cardinals, after East scored the first five points, the Lady Falcons reeled off 15-straight to grab a 15-5 lead early in the second quarter.
Forbush breezed to a 22-11 lead at the break after a Paris Trivette put-back at the buzzer.
In the third, East battled back and used a 13-2 burst to tie the game at 24-24 with 2:40 left in the period.
The teams traded hoops down the stretch in a back-and-forth fourth quarter.
After two Trivette free throws tied the game at 33-33, East answered. Ashley Hayes sank the front-end of a one-and-one but missed the second. Adrian Pardue grabbed the offensive rebound and laid it back up for a three-point lay to give the Cardinals a 36-33 lead with 5.5 seconds left.
With one second left, Brittany Moose intentionally missed a free throw for a chance at a put-back. But East grabbed the rebound and ran out the clock to preserve the thrilling 36-34 victory.
Savanah Hill paced the way with 10 points on the night, while Kala Doub and Moose added eight points apiece.
Against West, the Falcons led 40-37 with just over a minute to play, but saw the Blackhawks storm back.
Forbush was out-scored 8-0 in the final 1:09 and dropped a heart-breaking 45-40 decision.
Moose powered the Falcons with 12 points, six boards and six assists, while Hill added eight. Doub tacked on seven points, while Trivette recorded six points and seven rebounds.
Forbush (5-6) looks to get back on track Wednesday night when conference front-runner North Wilkes comes to East Bend.
