SPARTA - The two Forbush basketball squads are heading in very different directions at the halfway mark of the Mountain Valley Conference slate.

The Lady Falcons have won four straight league games to pull their record even at 4-4, while the boys have dropped three straight to fall 2-6 in conference play.

After handing Wilkes Central its first MVAC loss in over three years, the Forbush girls followed up the statement win with a big 53-38 victory over Alleghany last Tuesday in Sparta.

The Lady Falcons used a 20-point fourth quarter to pull away late, cruising to the comfortable win.

In the second game of the double-header, the Forbush boys let a fourth-quarter lead slip away, falling in heart-breaking fashion 46-42.

In a back-and-forth first half, Alleghany led 23-22 at the break. The Falcons out-scored the Trojans 11-6 in the third to take a 33-29 advantage to the final period.

But a fourth-quarter collapse doomed Forbush. Alleghany dropped 17 points in the frame, holding the Falcons to just nine points to pull out the 46-42 victory.

After a snowstorm postponed the Falcons’ twinbill with East Wilkes, Forbush returns to action this week in a packed slate of games.

The Forbush teams will play three conference games in four days this week, starting with a trip up to West Jefferson to take on Ashe County Tuesday night. East and North Wilkes come to East Bend on back-to-back nights Thursday and Friday to cap the week.

The Falcons (2-6) will look to avenge earlier losses to both Wilkes schools this week. Forbush knocked off the Huskies 63-37 in their first meeting.

The Lady Falcons (4-4) are the hottest team in the league, and will be seeking revenge this week after losing to all three squads earlier in the year.
