Ghouls, goblins and ghosts will wonder the streets of downtown Yadkinville on Halloween this year.

The Town of Yadkinville is working alongside the Yadkinville Downtown Business Association and the Yadkin County Library to offer the youth of Yadkinville a downtown trick or treat experience.

The event will be held on Oct. 31 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“It’s kind of a two-fold event,” said Paul Lowe, director of development and planning for Yadkinville. “We’re trying to bring more people downtown. Another point of the event is to let people know what kind of shops, businesses and services are available downtown.”

The event will feature trick or treating at 21 participating businesses, a showing of the film Tailypo at the library, a costume contest and storytelling by Elizabeth Keatley. Cash prizes, donated by the DBA, will be available for the winner of the costume contest.

The film will start at the Yadkin County Public Library at 3:30 p.m. and there will only be one showing. The costume contest will take place at the YARD at the Yadkin County Arts Council from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The contest judges will be members of the DBA.

Storytelling will also take place at the YARD from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the costume contest winner between 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The businesses participating in the trick or treat event are:

• Allie J’s Salon and Spa

• Blue Ridge Medical Group

• Cain Tire

• Carney Insurance (Nationwide)

• Charles E. Scott, CPA, P.A.

• CMS Insurance and Financial

• Community Links Center

• Edward Jones

• Gentry Family Funeral Service

• Gregory J. Matthews – Attorney at Law

• H&R Block

• Idlewild Realty

• Mackie’s Jewelry and Trophies

• MiMi & Me

• Miss Emily Antiques

• Salon 601

• Suntrust Bank and Trust

• Third Branch Café

• Town of Yadkinville

• Verizon Wireless Center

• Yadkin County Public Library

Anyone interested in taking their child to trick or treat may stop by the YARD at the Yadkin Arts Council or the Yadkin county Library to pick up a flyer with a map.

Each participating business will have a sign on its door to let people know they are welcome to come in to trick or treat. The town asks that community members take note of the signs and not venture into non-participating stores asking for candy.

The Yadkinville Police Department will be on hand to oversee traffic and safety for the children who trick or treat.

Lowe said that the town decided to hold the event earlier in the day to make it convenient for business owners and families who might want to attend.

“We’re having it earlier in the day so that we’re not asking the businesses to stay open later and also because we don’t want to interfere with church events or families plans to trick or treat in their neighborhoods,” Lowe said.

Lowe said that he hopes this event will provide entertainment for local residents while increasing awareness of the businesses available to them this holiday season.

“I think it’s going to be a very nice, little event,” said Lowe. “We want to create more interest in downtown because we have a lot of nifty shops available to the community.”
