EAST BEND - Forbush hoped to ride its late-season surge through the 2A state playoff bracket, but the Falcons ran into a tough Draughn team in the opening round Friday.
Draughn, the two seed from the Catawba Valley Conference, quieted Forbush’s bats and earned a 4-1 opening-round victory.
The Lady Falcons threatened early in the game, loading the bases in the second inning with no outs. But the Wildcats got out of the frame unscathed before plating four runs in the home-half of the inning.
Forbush managed to scrap and put runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings before finally breaking through and getting on the board in the sixth on a Natalie Houser double to score Mallory Choplin. But it was too little too late as Draughn escaped with the 4-1 win.
The Falcons, who stormed past Wilkes Central and Starmount in back-to-back games to reach the Mountain Valley Conference tournament championship game, was looking to ride that momentum through the playoffs, but saw their season come to a sudden end.
Forbush caps its season 16-10.
