For what potentially was their final game at Starmount, the Lady Ram seniors put on an offensive show on Friday night, and pounded the boards against the North Wilkes Vikings for the 73-38 win.

“It was senior night for them and I’m really proud of what they were able to do, and what they’ve done for our program,” said Starmount Coach Kyle Hutchens.

Senior Kelli Bonner piled up 31 points to lead all scorers in the game, including three three-pointers.

“I feel like it was closure. It felt good to win. It wouldn’t have felt right if we didn’t win,” Bonner said.

For Becca Aplin, Starmount’s second senior, a rush of mixed emotions hit her after the game was over.

“I was happy because I got to play for all four years, but it’s sad because it was the last home game…it’s emotional,” she said.

Aplin hit a pair of threes second quarter, and finished the game with eight points.

In addition to the senior duo lighting up the basket, Starmount’s underclassmen also posted big numbers against the Vikings.

Amber Wooten and Paris Trivette each had big games inside the paint.

Wooten knocked down 12 points, while Trivette had 10.

“Paris played well. I thought she had a good game tonight. Amber also had a good week of games,” Hutchens said.

Although their senior night came to an end on Friday, one memory stands above the rest for the pair of seniors.

“I think it would be beating Ashe County( two years ago). To beat a team on that level was really big,” Bonner said.

“Yeah, I agree with that,” Aplin said.

The Rams edged out a 69-68 win over the Ashe County Huskies on Dec. 18, 2008, giving the Huskies their only loss during the regular season. The Huskies went on to finish the season with a 26-2 record, including a late push into the state playoffs.

For the Lady Vikings, Allie Church led the team with 14 points, while Allie Shumate had nine.

Although the Rams posted big numbers against the Vikings, perhaps the biggest news of the night came from Moravian Falls.

The Wilkes Central Eagles defeated the Forbush Falcons 71-43, essentially putting the Rams into the state playoffs.

With their final regular season game over, the Rams tipped off in their first conference tournament game on Tuesday night at Alleghany.

Results from the tournament games were unavailable at press time.
