The Buckin’ Elks men’s soccer team put out a stronger performance in Tuesday night’s soccer match than it did in the week prior, but still, it wasn’t enough.

North Surry senior captain David Martinez scored with 10 minutes left to put the Greyhounds up for good for a 2-1 win, their first of the season. Martinez broke free on an inside cut and got it past the goalie for the game-winning goal.

“I had a vision,” Martinez said. “It’s always been a skill of mine doing cuts inside.”

Said Islas got the Buckin’ Elks (1-3) on the board with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. Islas broke free of his defender giving him a one-on-one opportunity, and he beat the goalie to put the Buckin’ Elks up 1-0. The lead would not last long, though, as with 6 minutes remaining in the first half, the Greyhounds (1-3) were on the attack as junior Jonathan Cabrera scored on a nice cross pass to tie it up.

A key moment was after the Greyhounds were rewarded a free kick following a yellow card, they scored on a deflection, but the goal was called back. During the kick, a Greyhounds player pushed one of the Elkin players, so the goal was disallowed. From there on out, the Greyhounds maintained offensive control, finally capitalizing with the late goal.

Elkin’s next game is at home Wednesday against Mount Airy (2-2 at press time) at 5:15 p.m.
