BOONVILLE — West Wilkes took home the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference championship Saturday, but not without a close battle with some local teams.

The Blackhawks edged out Elkin 191.50-157.50 for the tournament championship, and the overall conference. While equal in wins with Elkin with three, the Blackhawks competed in the finals for eight out of the 14 weight classes. Those points quickly added up, and gave them the little edge they needed.

Elkin’s three wins came from sophomore Ryan Patterson in the 113 lb. weight class, senior Said Javier in the 126 lb. class, and Ethan Chipman in the 145 lb. weight class.

East Wilkes’ Colby Cooper also picked up a quick win against Ashe County for the championship in the 182 lb. weight class. Cooper was one of the few in the finals to pick up a win by a pin after a massive takedown.

Next up for the teams is the state playoffs, and matchups are set to begin Tuesday night. However, seeding will not come out until later in the day Monday.

Elkin is expected to have a home match Tuesday night, while East Wilkes could be on the road. Starmount has had a tough season so chances of making the state playoffs are uncertain for the Rams.

When brackets are released, they can be found at elkintribune.com. Full results from Saturday’s meet can be found below.
