RONDA- East Wilkes had been patiently waiting for their first basketball game of the season, but now the boys are waiting for their first win.
The boys dropped their first regular season game to rival West Wilkes Friday night 65-57. West Wilkes was strong all game, and were able to hold off a late comeback. The Cardinals pulled to within one 40-39 in the third quarter, but then the Blackhawks went on an 8-2 run to pull away.
East Wilkes junior Joah Logan led the team in scoring with 14 points, while senior Andrew Nance had 13 points. The boys played an exhibition game last week at UNC Asheville and lost big to Riverside 67-31. Due to the school’s deep run in the football playoffs, the start of the basketball season was delayed. The scheduled first game against Atkins has been rescheduled to Jan. 20.
The girls did get the chance to play Atkins on Tuesday night, but fell 57-29. Following that, the Cardinals were looking for their first win of the season, and that’s exactly what they got in their first conference game of the season. Behind some clutch play by Chelsea Edwards, the Cardinals were able to pull away for a 55-48 win. After West Wilkes took a 30-29 lead in the third quarter, Edwards sank two straight 3-pointers as part of a 9-2 run. The Cardinals would not give up the lead from there on out.
Next up for the Cardinals is a Tuesday trip to Danbury to play North Stokes. The boys are 2-2, while the girls are 1-3. Varsity play starts at 6 p.m.
