Taking flight off of the starting block is Elkin senior Tyler Eaton. Last year, Eaton was named to the All-Conference team, and started his season off right, placing first in the 200-yard individual medley and second in the 100 butterfly.

WILKESBORO – The heat was on as Elkin, East Wilkes, and Starmount all headed west to the Wilkes Family YMCA to kick off the swimming season.

Elkin came off of the blocks hot, beating out eight other schools in both the boys and girls categories for the overall win. For the girls, the Lady Elks scored 81 total points, beating out second-place Surry Central by 12. For boys, the competition wasn’t even close, as Elkin scored 127 points, beating out second-place Surry Central by 84.

East Wilkes girls scored 18 points overall, finishing sixth overall while the boys had 24 points, good for fourth. Starmount brought twelve entries, and the small team showed some muscle. Whether or not it will grow and have someone like near-Olympian Julianna Prim again is yet to be seen, but a growth in participation would certainly help their odds.

Next meet for these teams will be Dec. 9 at 5 p.m. at the Wilkes Family YMCA. Following that, the teams will take a brief break from the water before starting off the new year in the pool Jan. 6.

Results from all 22 events can be found at Swimphone.com.
