An Elkin legend for more than 40 years was honored earlier this fall.
John Charles was inducted into the Lenoir-Rhyne Hall of Fame in late September. Charles was a coach at Elkin High School and an active member of the community, and was part of the inaugural Surry County Sports Hall of Fame.
During his time at Elkin High School, Charles brought championships to the Buckin’ Elks, winning the football championship in 1967 as a coach, and leading the track team to four undefeated seasons.
Charles taught and coached for 41 years and also worked for Elkin Recreation Center for many years.
During his time at Lenoir-Rhyne, Charles was a three-time Team Most Valuable Player and all-conference honoree (1947-49) as a member of the Bears’ football team. Charles was also a WWII veteran, serving in the 82nd Airborne.
Charles passed away on Feb. 23, 2008, but his legacy lives on.
