Except for football, the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference has named its All-Conference members for the fall of 2015.

Most recently, the soccer All-Conference players were named, and Starmount was well represented, as were the eventual champions, Wilkes Central. Starmount fell to Mount Airy in a tight match, denying it a spot in the Final Four.

Volleyball came to a close earlier this month, with an MVAC team, Alleghany, winning it all. Starmount and East Wilkes both fell in the second round of the playoffs in tight matches, but still were well represented. Elkin junior Samantha Cozart was strong on both sides of the ball, enough to add her to the list of players despite just barely missing a playoff berth.

Tennis ran through Elkin this season, with Miracle Walters being named Player of the Year, Melissa Smith being named Coach of the year. It was all capped off by a remarkable run by the doubles team of Walters and Morgan Randleman to the championship match. East Wilkes also had great representation, naming four players to the All-Conference team.

Women’s golf in North Carolina, and the country in general is still a growing sport, but it helps to have athletes like Palmer Duncan of Elkin, and Hunter Tharpe of East Wilkes competing. Tharpe would go on to finish strong in the state championship as well.

When it came to cross country, there was no surprise to see plenty of East Wilkes Cardinals on the list. Kyle Rhodes, the 1A State Champion, along with many of the girls who also qualified for the state championship, were named to the All-Conference team as well.

As stated earlier, football has not named their players, but expect a large group of deserving players from East Wilkes to be named. They’re one of two conference teams left in the playoffs, with a perfect season on the line. Defensive leaders like Quincy Lineberger, Chris Dixon, Andrew Elmore, and even Joah Logan as of late deserve to be recognized. Offensively, it’s been an incredible season for seniors Andrew Nance and Camon Bryan, but also deserving recognition is Bryce Vestal. Vestal was thrown into the ring at quarterback, when Chris Ward went down with an injury. Ward, even, deserves recognition, for being as much of a leader off the field as he was the four weeks he was behind center.
