EAST BEND — Forbush earned its way into the second round of the 2A Men’s Soccer State Championship playoffs Wednesday afternoon. By coming out of the gates strong early on, the Falcons punched their ticket for a bus ride to Newton-Conover on Saturday night.

With a 3-0 win over Parkwood, they now move on to play at Newton-Conover High School at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Just to get there though, they had a task at hand on the Forbush Middle School soccer field. The field itself is actually slightly longer and wider than the high school field, creating more space and more opportunities. Senior captain Ryan Miller was the first to pounce on an opportunity, scoring twice in the opening minutes. Miller already was focused on the next game as time expired.

“We have a little tension there [against Newton-Conover] from last year since we lost in the fourth round, we just kind of want to give it to them,” Miller said.

Also joining the scoring parade was junior Saul Zamora, who got a great cross from freshman Carson Davis for the goal. Parkwood was playing with a sense of urgency, and had some great opportunities in the second half. That’s when Zamora and Davis locked in and found the back of the net.

“Parkwood obviously needed to score a goal, they were down by two, they lose, they’re out. They were putting high pressure on, all we could do is get them on the counter,” Zamora said.

There’s no doubt that Forbush wants its season to be extended, but to do that, the team will have to pull off somewhat of an upset. Newton-Conover, on the other hand, barely averted an upset Wednesday night playing West Lincoln, a game that ultimately came down to penalty kicks.

Rain is in the forecast yet again on Saturday, and coaches will be watching it closely. If there is an update to the time of Saturday’s game, it will be posted online at both The Tribune and Yadkin Ripple websites.
