Elkin’s Lady Elks put up a fight but came up just short in Tuesday night’s volleyball match against West Wilkes.

The two teams traded set wins back and forth, with Elkin (4-9, 3-5 MVAC) grabbing the first set, but in the deciding match, it was West Wilkes who opened up a gap which was too much to overcome. In a tiebreaker set, volleyball is a race to 15 points, and tied at two, West Wilkes put up six straight points. They would go on to win the final match 15-12.

“I think the big thing that really hurt us tonight was our back row game,” Elkin Head Coach Jerry Brown said. “We couldn’t get passes to target, and when you can’t do that, you can’t get hits down.”

As West Wilkes pulled ahead 14-5, one point away from victory, the Lady Elks kept their heads up and gave it their all with senior Kenly Burchette stepping up to serve. The team pulled together, won volleys, had aces, and showed no quit to make for an exciting finish.

“They’re scrappy. This team wants to win,” Brown said. “When Kenly went up to serve we were eight [sic] points down and she brought us within two points, and it was because they didn’t give up, and just because the other team was sitting on 14, they didn’t say, ‘They’ve won.’ They came in the huddle and said, ‘We’ve come back from bigger than this.’”

Despite the comeback coming up just short, Brown is encouraged about the young team that she has.

“I’m looking forward to starting off the second half of our season. We battled hard, we were down a player (Junior MacKenzie Tilley did not play final three sets). If we can stay healthy, we’ve got a better shot at it,” Brown said.

The Lady Elks have an interesting next three games, starting with Thursday against Ashe County at home (Results not available at press time). Following that, the Lady Elks play on October 6 at Alleghany before returning home for a rematch against Starmount. On Sept. 15, Elkin jumped out to an early lead but Starmount came surging back for a 3-1 win. All games are scheduled to begin with JV at 4:30.
