Week five is upon the Yadkin Valley, and while there aren’t any huge rivalry games, there are plenty of intriguing matchups this weekend.

East Wilkes (3-0) is set to host Forbush (2-2) Friday night at 7:30. East Wilkes had a goal at the start of the year to be undefeated when conference play starts, and they’re one week away from accomplishing one of many goals they have for this season. They steamrolled over South Stokes 34-0 week one, before dismantling Surry Central 48-14 in week two. Last weekend, they had their closest match of the year against North Stokes, but prevailed again for a 27-17 victory. Their attack is balanced behind quarterback Chris Ward, fullback Camon Bryan, and Andrew Nance, but they don’t expect to have it easy when they take on the Falcons.

As if the Falcons needed any more motivation, they’re coming off of their 10th straight loss in the annual Unifi Bowl against Starmount (1-2). Four turnovers in the first half kept Forbush from putting points on the board when they needed them the most. They came out full of energy, leading twice early on, but crumbled late for a 35-15 loss.

On the other side of that game was Starmount, who grabbed its first win of the season. Despite starting 0-2, they had some good competition to go up against in Mount Airy and East Surry. They’re also in their last game before conference play. They host Thomasville Friday night at 7:30.

Elkin (0-4) gets a much needed off week before traveling to Starmount for arguably its biggest game of the year. Elkin’s biggest struggle this year has been its defense. They’ve allowed 167 points over four games, and only have 52 of their own. Their offense means nothing if they continue giving up big plays like they have.

Despite the fact that these games are non-conference, they do have an impact on the playoff picture. Wilkes Central (4-0) and East Wilkes are the only undefeated teams in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. Alleghany, Starmount, West Wilkes and North Wilkes have all won one game while Ashe County and Elkin are winless so far.
