RONDA — The East Wilkes Cardinals are flying right now, and after Friday night’s football game against North Stokes, they show no signs of stopping.
East Wilkes defeated North Stokes 27-17 at home to move to 3-0 on the season. It would take a solid performance to match what Andrew Nance did last week in a 46-13 win over Surry Central. In that game, Nance had 119 yards combined rushing and receiving, but Nance did not just match that Friday night, but bettered it. Nance ran for three touchdowns on the night, all for 30 yards or more. Despite committing six turnovers, the Cardinals were up 21-7 at halftime and hung on.
East Wilkes has a goal to be undefeated when conference play begins, and it has one more team to go through to make good on that goal in the Forbush Falcons.
For the second week in a row, the Falcons will play in the game of the week. The Falcons (2-2) showed glimpses of hope in a 35-15 loss against the Starmount Rams in the Unifi Bowl Friday night. However, costly turnovers in the red zone led to 29 unanswered points for the Rams. Take some of those turnovers away, and the Falcons could have been stealing the trophy away from the Rams for the first time in 10 years.
Forbush’s Cameron Engebretson’s and Zane Johnson’s combined running attack could threaten East Wilkes’ hopes to stay undefeated, but Cardinals quarterback Chris Ward, fullback Camon Bryan, or Andrew Nance will try to stop them.
