BOONVILLE — Starmount volleyball left no doubt that things are clicking for its team as it beat East Wilkes on Thursday night. A strong front line presence, as well as several aces, and back-row digs helped the Rams take a 3-0 win over the Cardinals.
The first set Starmount started the game off strong and never looked back as they held on to a lead the whole set. The Rams got off to a 5-1 lead with the help of Kayla Vanhoy and Callie Trivette, who both had a kill. The Cardinals were able to break the Rams’ scoring streak with a kill by Kallie Blackburn, who made the score 6-2. The kill by Blackburn lifted the Cardinals to earn a few more points, but the Rams found their second wind and went on another five-point run to make the score 16-5. After a two-touch call on the Rams, a kill by East Wilkes’ Katie Prevette, and a block from Rachel Prevette, the Cardinals were able to earn eight points, but that would be all they would score in the first set. The Rams took control in the final points, and won the first set with an impressive 25-8 score.
The second set saw East Wilkes take a quick 4-3 lead, but the Rams got the lead back with Vanhoy serving three aces in a row. With the score 7-4, Chloe Ford found a kill for the Rams to earn a four-point lead, from there the Rams didn’t look back. Vanhoy earned five more aces, Taylor Wood, Maggie Freed and Trivette put down kills to give the Rams a 25-9 win.
Throughout the match, the Cardinals got consistently better, but they were unable to overcome the Rams’ serves and their kills. In the third set, the Cardinals were able to break into double-digits, but the Rams were still too strong for East Wilkes as they won the third set 25-14. Both teams had several missed serves in the final set, with the Rams raking in five missed serves, and the Cardinals raking in seven.
