ELKIN — Jeyson Pineda and Victor Maya each had a hat trick during Starmount’s 8-0 win over Elkin on Wednesday night. The Rams (3-0) have held on to an undefeated MVAC record so far this season, while the Elks have a 1-1 MVAC record. Wednesday night, the Rams took control of the game in the first half and they never looked back.
Starmount had several shots on goal in the first half, before Elkin could get the ball on the offensive side of the field. The Elkin defense was able to hold off the Rams’ attack until the 16th minute, when Pineda got things going for Starmount. Pineda found himself with the ball in the 18-yard box and beat two defenders before slotting the ball home to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Pineda found himself another goal as he was wide open in the box. At the half, the Rams were holding on to a 2-0 lead.
The second half saw the Rams score six goals throughout the 40-minute half. The first goal came in the first minute of the half, as Elkin was called for a handball in the box. Maya stepped up and slotted the ball into the back of the net to give the Rams a 3-0 lead. In the 46th minute, Maya found another goal for the Rams to take the score to 4-0. While the Elks were struggling to keep up with the Rams’ offensive attacks, Pineda found his third goal, and the Rams fifth goal of the night.
In the 58th minute, Elkin found a breakaway courtesy of Daniel Soos, but he was unable to make it past Starmount’s defensive line. On the opposite side of the field three minutes later, Logan Styers found the net off of a corner kick to give the Rams a 6-0 lead. As time was winding down, the Rams didn’t let up their offensive attacks. With 10 minutes left in the game, the Rams found another goal as sophomore Jose Patino put the lead at 7-0. Just when Elkin thought the game was done and the Rams were finished scoring, Maya put the ball in the back of the net after a scramble in the box to earn his third goal of the night and give the Rams a 8-0 win over Elkin.
While the score line doesn’t show it, Elkin’s keeper Asher McRitchie made several great saves for the Elks throughout the game. In the closing minutes of the second half, McRitchie made a great reaction save to keep the Rams from scoring another goal. Soos and Isaac Powell also had a great game for Elkin as they kept their team from getting down on themselves throughout the game. Elkin was without forward, Said Islas, who was suspended for Wednesday’s game.
Elkin’s schedule doesn’t get any easier, as they travel to Wilkes Central (2-2) on Monday night for a conference game, while Starmount will take on Alleghany (0-3) at home on Sept. 26.
