North Surry slips past Central for conference cross-country title

Staff Report

DOBSON — North Surry’s boys team won the Western Piedmont cross country title on Tuesday, besting Surry Central at the conference championship. But Forbush runner Dakota Mendenhall topped the individual results.

The Greyhounds had five runners in the top 20, including senior Matthew Mayes finishing second.

Going by the top five finishers per team, North Surry edged Surry Central by a single point, 51 to 52.

How close was the team race? Central’s Blake Woods finished 0.38 of a second behind West Stokes’ Collin Marot for 12th place. If Woods had edged Marot, then the two Surry schools would have been tied at 51.

On the girls’ side, only Forbush and West Stokes had enough runners to field a full team.

The Lady Falcons beat the Lady Wildcats, despite West senior Kaitlyn Stone adding another conference title to her trophy case.

Stone beat Forbush sophomore Anna-Kathryn Kilby by nearly a full minute. However, the Falcons had seven of the top 12 finishers to easily beat West Stokes, which had three runners in the top 10.

North Surry’s Alma Rodriguez has been posting top-three times this season, but finished 19th, more than six minutes off her usual pace.

Surry Central didn’t have enough finishers for a team, but had two girls in the top 10.

Junior Lora McDevitt finished fourth, and teammate Mirian Hernandez was seventh, about 45 seconds back.
