BOONVILLE — The Elkin Buckin’ Elks and Starmount Rams are on the same page when it comes to their young basketball teams. Both teams are under .500, and before Tuesday night, both teams were on a losing streak.
The Rams had lost two games in a row, and had only one win under their belt. The Buckin’ Elks were on a five-game losing streak, and had yet to win a game. With both teams coming out of the gate with young players, a conference win over their rivals was on both team’s Christmas list. Only one team was able to come up with the win, the Rams earned their second win of the season with 45-26 victory.
Both teams started off the game on the right foot, but it was the Elks who were able to take an early lead. Beau Burgess hit a three-point shot from the top of the key to give Elkin a 3-0 lead. Elkin followed Burgess’ shot with a two-point basket by Austin Longworth.
While Elkin was flying high with a 5-0 lead, the Rams battled back on their next two possession where they made back-to-back threes. Griffin Cass made one three-point shot from the left-hand side to make the score 5-3, then Cass made another three-point shot from the opposite side to gave Starmount a 6-5 lead. Cass didn’t stop his scoring run as he made two more shots to give the Rams an 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams kept their shots coming in the second quarter as Ethan Barnes started things off with a two-point basket. Elkin answered back on its next possession as Ezra Atkinson made his shot to take the score to 13-9. Elkin cut Starmount’s lead to two points on its next play when Burgess made another basket. While Elkin was able to make the most of its possessions, Starmount kept things going on offense and defense. At halftime, the Rams had a 20-13 lead over the Buckin’ Elks.
After halftime, Starmount came out firing. The Rams went on a six-point scoring run before the Elks were able to score their first basket since the fifth minute of the second quarter. Starmount kept up its pace and outlasted the Rams in the third quarter to take a 32-21 lead. The final quarter, Elkin tried to overcome Starmount, but it was unable to hang on. The Rams went on to take a 45-26 win over their rivals.
Starmount moves to 2-4 overall, the Rams match up against Ashe County (2-6) on Friday. Elkin matches up against West Wilkes on Friday.
