Downpour a downer for racers

Mother Nature was not on North Carolina’s side this past weekend, as the Yadkin Valley did not hear its usual roaring engines at Friendship Motor Speedway.

Racing was postponed at many venues across the state Saturday night due to heavy rainfall and lightning in the area.

Racing will resume this coming Saturday night, as fireworks are bound to happen both on and off the track for the Fourth of July weekend. During racing on June 20, there were some aggressive drivers out on the track, including some reckless driving in the garage. Whether those emotions were washed away with the rain is left to be seen.

As the series nears the halfway point of the season, the championship standings for each division are extremely close.

In the SECA Crate Late Model Division, Chris Cheek has the largest lead out of any division, leading Dobson’s Chase McCormick by 47 points. McCormick picked up his second win of the season last week, so look for him to try and erase that deficit as the season continues on.

Billy Robinson leads the Super Stock 4 division by six points over Kevin Atwell, while Shaun Robinson leads Victor Dunham by three points in the Renegade series. Last week, Elkin’s George Anen earned his second-consecutive win, and sits 14 points back in third.

Austin Caudle earned another win last week in the Extreme Stock 4 division, and now leads the points standings by four points over Randy Powell. Trailing just behind in third is Jonesville’s Kayla Harrell.

Austin’s wife Stephanie Caudle came up just short on the last lap of the U-CAR series, but held on to her lead over Aaron Jones by 20 points.

Richard Clew proved yet again that if anyone else wants the Open Wheel Modified championship, they’re going to have to go through him. Clew currently leads by 43 points over Andrew Dunham, and has either dominated a race or overcome adversity over the past two weeks to end up out front.

Finally, in the Limited Sportsman series, it appears to be a two-man race, as Jay Foley and Matt Johnson have separated themselves from the rest of the field in points. Foley currently has the edge by five points.

Gates open at 3 p.m. Saturday night, with hot laps starting shortly after 6:15 p.m.
