EAST BEND — Dylan Ray, an 11th-grade student at Forbush High School, is saddling up to Wyoming next week.
He earned a spot on the North Carolina National High School Rodeo team, and will travel to Rock Springs, Wyoming, for the 67th annual National High School Finals Rodeo in the Team Roping competition.
The event features 1,500 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia, making it the largest rodeo competition in the world. The rodeo runs from July 12-18.
There’s a lot of money on the line in terms of prize money and college scholarship money, totaling more than $500,000. To reach the championship match on July 18, a competitor must finish in the top 20 of their respective event. Then, national champions will be determined by the combined three round’s scores/times.
Ray is making his second-straight appearance in the NHSFR, and has previously made appearances in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo.
Live streams of each event will be available at NHSRATV.com.
