BOONVILLE — The Starmount High School soccer program is holding an Alumni Game on April 16 in honor of Austin Macemore. It will be a time for alumni to reminisce about their time playing soccer, while also honoring Macemore’s extraordinary life.

Austin Macemore was a 2012 graduate of Starmount who passed away three years ago from cancer. Macemore was a two-sport athlete at Starmount, he wrestled and played soccer. He was well known by both the student bodies at Forbush and Starmount and by the entire county, as well as many of the surrounding counties. He was a Christian and had a firm belief in God. He spread the word of the gospel every chance that he got.

Macemore was voted Ram of the Year at Starmount his senior year. He received the I-Dare-You Award at graduation, as voted by his senior class and faculty, and he also received the Heart of a Champion Award from the state of North Carolina.

Starmount soccer Coach Dale Draughn, the organizer for this year’s alumni game, recalls one of his fondest memories of Macemore. “I remember his sophomore year in high school Austin came up to me and said, ‘Coach I do not think I am going to be able to attend camp this summer.’ I asked him why, and he said that he had an opportunity to go on a mission trip to spread the word of Jesus Christ and he knew that was what God wanted him to do. I told him to go do what God called him to do. When he got back he was elated and could not wait to tell me. I loved seeing the pure joy in his eyes. Austin was a people person and never really had a bad word to say about anyone. I think of Austin daily and it always puts a smile on my face.”

All proceeds from this event will go towards the SHS women’s soccer program. For those who would like to participate, the event is asking each participants: Pay an entry fee of $20 to help cover officials and T-shirts, and that each player wears shin guards. Warm ups are set for 2:30 p.m. on the Starmount soccer field.

For those who would like to participate, the organizers are asking that them to complete the form listed on Facebook.com/SHSSoccerProgramsAlumniGameInformationPage and that mail the form and a check made payable to SHS Lady Rams, c/o Dale Draughn, 2516 Longtown Road, Boonville, NC 27011.

“I know that Austin is up in Heaven having a great time,” Draughn said. “His body is healed and he is watching over us. I only wish that I could be half the man that Austin Macemore was.”
