Candidates stood outside the Yadkinville Senior Center to greet voters and make one last attempt to win their vote before they cast their ballot. Most candidates had been greeting voters since 6:30 a.m.

Voters line the polling stations at the Yadkinville Senior Center. Voters had from 6:30 am. to 7:30 p.m. to cast their vote in the May 8 primary election.
Lines formed throughout Yadkin County on Tuesday as voters turned out to cast their ballots for the primary. Voters were allowed to vote for their presidential candidate, state official candidates, board of education members and the highly controversial amendment one. With 10,067 ballots cast there was a 42.60 percent voter turnout in the county.
Amendment One
Yadkin County voted in favor of amendment one by 82.45 percent.
Local Elections
Voters were given the opportunity to vote on the Yadkin County Board of Education members. There were eight non-partisan candidates and voters were allowed to choose four of the candidates or elect to write-in a candidate.
The winners of the school board election were Joe Dezern with 14.53 percent, Rex (Buck) Baity with 13.96 percent, Lynn Allred with 13.43 percent and Jennifer Spaulding Hemric with 12.89 percent.
The remaining race results are as follows:
- District Six (Elkin and Surry County) for the United States House of Representatives: Republican Howard Coble (incumbent) defeated Republicans Bill Flynn and Billy Yow. Coble will face Democrat Tony Foriest in the general election in November.
- District Five (Jonesville and Yadkin County) for the United States House of Representatives: Democrat Elisabeth Motsinger defeated Democrat Bruce Peller and Motsinger will face Republican Virginia Foxx in the general election.
- District 73 for the NC House of Representatives: Republican Mark Hollo defeated Republican Darrell G. McCormick. Hollo will face Democrat William Clinton Stinson in the general election.
- Board of Commissioners for Surry County: Republican Paul Johnson (incumbent) defeated Republican Michael Hewett with approximately 57 percent of the vote. Democrat David Hunter Diamont defeated Democrat Eddie Brown with approximately 67 percent of the vote.
- N.C. Governor: Republican Pat McCrory defeated fellow Republicans Jim Harney, Scott A. Jones, Jim Mahan, Charles Kenneth Moss, and Paul Wright with a huge majority – over 80 percent – of the vote. As of press time, Democrat Walter H. Dalton was leading fellow Democrats Gary M. Dunn, Bob Etheridge, Bill Faison, Gardenia M. Henley, and Brue Blackmon.
- N.C. Lieutenant Governor: As of press time, Republican Dan Forest was leading fellow Republicans Dale Folwell, Tony Gurley, Grey Mills, and Arthur Jason Rich. As of press time, Democrat Linda Coleman was leading Democrat Eric Mansfield.
- N.C. Auditor: As of press time, Republican Debra Goldman was leading fellow Republicans Joseph Hank DeBragga, Greg Dority, Fern Shubert, and Rudy Wright.
- N.C. Commissioner of Agriculture: Republican Steve Troxler defeated Republican Bill McManus. Democrat Walter Smith defeated Democrat Scott Bryant.
- N.C. Commissioner of Insurance: As of press time, Republican Richard Morgan was leading fellow Republicans James McCall and Mike Causey.
- N.C. Secretary of State: As of press time, Republican candidate Ed Goodwin was leading fellow Republicans A.J. Daoud, Kenn Gardner, and Michael Beitler.
- N.C. Commissioner of Labor: At press time, Democratic candidate John C. Brooks had a majority of the vote over fellow Democrats Marlowe Foster and Ty Richardson.
- N.C. Treasurer: Republican Steve Royal, an Elkin resident defeated Republican Frank Roche. Democrat Janet Cowell (incumbent) defeated Democrat Ron Elmer.
- N.C. Superintendent of Public Instruction: As of press time, Republican candidate John Tedesco was leading fellow Republicans Ray Ernest Martin, David Scholl, Richard Alexander, and Mark Crawford.
- President of the United States: Republican Mitt Romney won the race against fellow Republicans Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum. He will face current president Barack Obama in the general election in November.
All results are unofficial. Official results will be available on May 15.
