The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina recently honored the Yadkin Family YMCA’s volunteer of the year at the organization’s Annual Celebration on April 16.
The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina honors adults who demonstrate exceptional volunteerism and consideration toward others with the YMCA Strong Award. George Reavis was selected by the Yadkin Family YMCA.
George Reavis became a volunteer at the Yadkin Family YMCA in November 2010. He volunteers three days a week greeting members as they enter and leave the Y as well as making conversation with them as they wait in the lobby.
Reavis was severely injured in a fall at his home in 2008 and was unable to continue with his job as a police officer for the city of Winston-Salem. He wanted to be able to contribute his time in helping others and giving back to his community. The Y has been that place for him – a place that has assisted in his recovery process.
“His volunteer service has made a tremendous positive effect on George and his family, but George has made the same tremendous positive effect on those he comes into contact at the Y,” said Tres Fordham, Executive Director of the Yadkin Family YMCA. “We are proud to be able to say thank you to George for the courage he has displayed each day and his genuine smile that is so welcoming to our members.
“The Y could not exist without the support of volunteers. These members of the community give their time and talent to make the Y’s work possible,” said Fordham. “George truly represents the YMCA mission of, ‘Helping people reach their God-given potential in spirit, mind and body.’”
