This weekend will offer families the opportunity to shop tax free. The tax holiday will take place Friday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Aug. 5.
“The sales tax holiday is kind of like the day after Thanksgiving,” said Gregg Thompson, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business. “It gets people fired up and puts them in the mood to shop, and that’s exactly what our economy needs right now. The more we can encourage spending at our small businesses, the more jobs we’ll save, and the faster our economy will recover.”
Local business owners are gearing up for the holiday by placing their children’s clothes on sale. Trails End in Hamptonville will offer 40 percent of its collection of Le.Top Rabbit Moon children’s clothes and 20 percent of its collection of Carhartt Children.
““We expect to see an increase in children’s clothes this weekend due to the store’s sale and the tax free weekend,” said Crystal Anderson, Trails End store owner.
The store also offers men’s and women’s clothing that fall into the tax free holiday requirements.
“Stop by for some awesome deals on some school clothes,” Anderson said. “We appreciate the local business.”
The tax free eligible items include clothing, footwear and school supplies of $100 or less per item; school instructional materials of $300 or less per item; sports and recreational equipment of $50 or less per item; computers of $3,500 or less per item and computer supplies of $250 or less per item.
The tax free holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and lasts until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. Participation in the holiday is required and retailers cannot opt out.
