An injured U.S. Marine who lost both of his legs while serving in Afghanistan will be honored today as he drives through Surry County.
Fire departments across the county are shining up their fire trucks right now to prepare for Carnes to ride through Surry.
U.S. Marine Garrett Carnes will be a passenger on a motorcycle as he rides to his hometown of Mooresville, passing through the area.
Tara Hazelwood, wife of Chief Johnny Hazelwood of the Central Surry Volunteer Fire Department, said that fire trucks will be on every overpass on I-77 as Carnes passes by this afternoon. She said he will stop at the North Carolina Welcome Center about 3 p.m. She said Central Surry and Dobson’s Fire Department will be at the Dobson Exit flying an American flag between two ladder trucks. She expects that he will be passing that exit from 3:15 to 3:30 p.m.
“It’s pretty emotional to be a part of something like this,” said Hazelwood.
North Carolina and Virginia Patriot Guard Riders are escorting Carnes and his wife, Courtney, from Bethesda, Maryland to Mooresville. Carnes is being treated at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, undergoing surgeries and physical therapy.
Carnes lost both legs in an Afghanistan IED explosion in February.
Patriot Guard Riders will join the escort at various highway exits along I-77 this afternoon.
Garrett will be riding the back of at 1979 Harley Davidson Low Rider motorcycle with his dad for his escort home.
