BOONVILLE - The Rams continued their recent surge up the standings in style Thursday night.

Starmount plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to battle back and stun Yadkin County rival Forbush 3-2 in Boonville to win for the sixth time in its last seven Mountain Valley Conference contests.

Heading to the seventh down 2-1, the Rams got to Mason Doub twice in the frame to walk off past the Falcons.

Starmount picked up the win despite only managing four hits on the night. Luke Shore paced the offense with a pair of hits and a run scored, while Ben Combs and Caleb West rounded out the base hits.

West, Combs and Jeremy Whitaker provided the base-scoring hits for the Rams.

Whitaker dazzled on the mound, silencing Forbush’s potent offense for five stellar innings. The senior scattered three hits in the game, allowing just two runs, while throwing just 70 pitches.

Tanner Mathis earned the win with two shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three. Doub picked up the tough-luck loss for the Falcons, despite striking out 10.

Forbush, which came in riding a seven-game win streak in league play, only managed four hits on the game and turned in its lowest scoring output of the run in support of Doub. The Falcons averaged nearly eight runs a game during the streak, but were silenced by Starmount’s pitching staff.

Leadoff hitter Bryson Lee collected two of the four hits, while Ben Temple and Brad Dzeskewicz added RBI doubles on the night.

With the win, the Rams moved up the league standings with an 8-6 mark. Forbush dropped to 9-4 with the loss and fell three games behind front-runner Wilkes Central (12-2) in the race for the 2A crown.

The Rams return to action Tuesday night on the road against 1A-leading Alleghany, while the Falcons take on Elkin.
