Get ready to rev your engines because the Yadkin County Public Library is hosting its first poker run fundraising event.

The event will take place at Freeborne’s Eatery and Lodge in Laurel Springs.

“We were looking for ways to raise more money for the library than one or two dollars and the poker run was suggested,” said Jack Loudermilk, chairman of the Yadkin County Library board. “Usually it’s easier to involve people if you give people something for their money; that way they don’t mind helping out. It’s benefiting something that they want to help with plus they get something for their money.”

Loudermilk said that these fundraising efforts are necessary due to state budget cuts. Loudermilk said that the library system has faced more cuts each year, and the staff has suffered.

“We’re trying to raise some money for the library system because we’ve been cut so severely by the state,” Loudermilk said. “This is supporting the regional library system which, is a much more efficient way of having libraries than each one operating singly.

“The region does the financial management, all the book ordering and it manages all the other parts rather than each librarian having to have a staff to do that. We’re just trying to keep it alive till better times.”

The round trip will take the cars and bikes from Freeborne’s to Crossroads Harley Davidson in North Wilkesboro, then to Windsor Run Cellars in Hamptonville and finally to Grandeur Cycles in Jonesville and then back to Freeborne’s. The ride is slated to take about four hours.

“We hope this is advantageous to the sponsors where they stop,” Loudermilk said. “We hope that they’ll see the place and maybe have a beverage. If they want to buy something at the stops I’ve volunteered to go by and pick it all up and transport it back to Freeborne’s for them so they don’t have to worry about handling it.”

After the ride Freeborne’s will have a cookout and live music provided by 5 Play at 5: 30 p.m.

Check in is at 8:30 a.m. and motorcycles and cars will leave for the run at 10:30 a.m. Registration will be accepted at check in. Registration is $25 for riders and $15 for passengers. Pre-registration forms are available at all Northwest Regional Libraries. For additional questions contact Yadkin County Public Library at 679-8792.
