Starmount High School held a Poetry Slam Competition April 25-26 with the grand prize of a Kindle Fire with a two-year extended warranty.

The prize was made possible by a $250 grant won by English teacher, Kathy Taylor, from the Creative Communications Company.

Fifty-three students submitted original poems. Of these students, 31 students entered as contestants and 21 students chose to be audience members. During the first round of judging on April 25, contestants performed their poetry in front of a panel of three teacher judges.

The students were judged on the quality of their poetry and their performance. The top 10 scores determined the finalists for the final round of competition that was held in the school auditorium on April 26 in front of the student audience and a panel of judges made up teachers and central office staff.

The competition was so close that the winner Brittney Casstevens won by only .33 of a point. The finalists were Derek Amburn, Angel Couch, Sawyer Cranford, Zachery Finley, Cherokee Lloyd, Victoria Pacheco, Andrew Pardue, Whitney Pardue, and Janay Williams.

With community support, the school hopes to be able to continue the contest next year.
