The Yadkin County Board of Education said farewell to two board member at the August 6 meeting. Dr. Hazel Brown and Larry Vestal stepped down as board members.
Yadkin County Schools Board of Education held its first meeting of the school year on August 6. The meeting was filled with goodbyes as well as fresh beginnings as two board members stepped down and two more filled their place.
The board welcomed its two newly elected members Dr. Lynn Allred and Jennifer Hemric and said farewell to Dr. Hazel Brown and Larry Vestal.
“It’s been a great 12 years for me since 2000,” Dr. Brown said. “In that 12 years we have seen new buildings built at both high schools, we have two new middle schools, we have the Yadkin Early College and we’ve got the Yadkin Success Academy. Our facilities have come a long way and we have an extremely good people to work with on the board and the central office.”
The board all wished the department members the best and shared how each of them had contributed to the school system during their term.
“I learned a lot my first four years with Dr. Brown here on my right,” said board member Joe Dezern. “There’s no one better prepared for a board meeting than Dr. Brown. She reads not only what’s there but also between the lines sometimes but that’s a good thing. The thing that I’ve always like about these two board members is that even though we didn’t always fully agree with each other we were able to come to some sort of compromise or an agreement and still be able to speak to each other.”
Following a presentation of plaques to Dr. Brown and Larry Vestal, re-elected board members were sworn in as well as newly elected members.
The board also welcomed their two newest student representatives. Kayla Smith will be representing Forbush High School and Samuel Stone will represent Starmount High School. Milca Jarquin was sworn in to represent Yadkin Early College at the June meeting.
The board elected Howard McKnight as the new chairman of the board and Joe Dezern as the vice-chairman.
Other events from the meeting:
-The board voted to extend Superintendent Dr. Stewart Hobbs contract for an additional year. New board members Hemric and Allred abstained from voting.
-The board approved a contract with YVEDDI transportation to transport special needs children that are not able to ride a yellow bus pending an approved revised contract. The contract will reduce costs for the school system by $0.74 per mile.
-The board approved the construction bid for $29,960 for a playground and walking track at Yadkin Success Academy.
-The board approved the purchase new furniture for school cafeterias. Old furniture will be listed on the county’s govdeals.com site if they are not needed in other schools.
