It’s that time of year again where the sky will be lit with fireworks and towns will gather together to celebrate the independence of our nation.

The Downtown Business Association will host Yadkinville’s 12th annual Fourth of July celebration on July 4. The event will take place at Yadkinville Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with fireworks beginning at approximately 9:30 p.m.

This year’s celebration was threatened after summer storms ruined last year’s event and left the DBA with a large deficit on its hands.

“Because of the storms and everything that happened last year the DBA lost money hosting the 4th of July celebration last year,” said Brenda Brown, DBA treasurer. “I had to go before the Town of Yadkinville board and ask for funds to help us out with the fireworks because we could not do it without them. They came through for us.”

Members of the DBA also decided that they would begin the event at 10 a.m. instead of 3 p.m. to help provide relief from the heat for participants, help prevent the show cars from overheating and help them to avoid storms.

“We’re going to have a veterans program again this year so we decided to make the parade and veterans program earlier, so it will be cooler on the veterans in attendance,” Brown said. “We’re also hoping that the older cars won’t be running hot like they were last year and that most of the storms will hold off until the late evening.”

The event will feature at parade beginning at 10 a.m. followed by the kick off of the festival at Yadkinville Elementary School.

Any community members are welcomed to participate in the parade. The rules for parade participants include: no horseplay, no unsafe vehicles, no overloading and no inappropriate content.

Anyone interested in participating in the parade can register within two business days of the event. Applications are available at the Yadkinville Fire Department’s Web site: www.yvfd.org.

“We do want to thank the Yadkinville Volunteer Fire Department for helping us with the parade,” Brown said. “They help to set it up and make sure everything goes well.”

This year’s festival will see the return of train rides, inflatables, balloon animals, storytelling, live entertainment, games for children and adults, a 50/50 draw, craft vendors and a dunking booth.

“There will be some great entertainment and a lot of things for the kids to do at this year’s celebration,” Brown said.

There will be 12 food vendors on site offering items such as ribs, barbecue, homemade ice cream, pretzels, fried pickles, fried Oreos, funnel cakes, snow cones and homemade fried apple pies.

The event typically draws 6,000 to 8,000 people each year and requires volunteers from the DBA organization to run. This year’s festival is a result of those volunteers and the financial contributions of the Town of Yadkinville, Dr. Byun, Mackie’s, Yadkin Lumber Company and Southern Community Bank.

Brown said that she hopes that the changes made to this year’s festival makes it a success.

“I’m expecting a good crowd and I’m hoping that everyone is going to have a good time and get their bellies full while the kids have fun,” Brown said.
