EAST BEND - Rising Davie senior Jarette Hutchens captured a gold medal at the Hunter Identification National Competition last month.
Hutchens, who competes with Forbush, took home the top prize at the Hunter Identification National Competition in Hunters Education in Mansfield, Pa. on July 27.
The first-place finish was Hutchens’ second national championship - he captured same award four years ago - and his 21st national award competing with Forbush since 2008. The senior also had seven awards as a Davie competitor to his name, including a silver medal at the state competition in the bow.
With 313 competitors from 13 states, the Forbush Red Team finished third overall, with four individual awards.
Hutchen’s grandmother, Peggy Allen Phillips of Yadkin County, also took home an award from this year’s national competition.
Each year all of the teams donate shirts to a woman dubbed “The Eagle Lady.” She knits the shirts into a quilt to raffle off at nationals. Phillips, who has been at nationals supporting her grandson since 2001, won the raffle.
Hutchens and his mother, Paulette, would like to thank his grandparents, Bill and Peggy, for their continued support.
“They have been great supporters and we would like to tell them thank you for all the support you have done for us,” Paulette Hutchens said. “Since Jarette started hunters education, his grandparents have helped in so many ways. From taking him to practice, helping him shoot in the backyard, going to almost every event, and the mental support of studying for the tests. We can not express the gratitude and appreciation in words for all they have done for Jarette. We love you!”
