WINSTON-SALEM - Forbush freshman Isaac McMillan captured a gold medal at the 31st Annual North Carolina Junior High State Championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem on February 16.
McMillan, competing for Arrichion Wrestling Club out of Greensboro, cruised through the 12-man, 147-pound bracket to bring home the individual title.
The freshman used a first-round pin of Alexander Welsh (West Lincoln) and a 14-1 major decision over Pisgah’s Sam Young to reach the semifinals.
In the semis, McMillan battled past West McDowell’s Zeb Harris 6-5 to punch his ticket to the title bout.
The East Bend native blanked Harrison Stiteler from the Strong and Courageous Wrestling Club 9-0 in the finals to capture the gold medal.
Over 150 clubs and teams from across the state competed in the tournament.
McMillan post a 24-17 overall record on Forbush’s varsity wrestling team this past season, including winning one of three matches at the 2A Midwest Regional last week at Piedmont High School.
McMillan is the son of Daniel and Crystal McMillan of East Bend.
