EAST BEND — The Falcons are off to a hot start on the wrestling mat, posting a 10-15 mark in the first month of the season.
In a four-team tournament Saturday, Forbush went 1-3, knocking off former Mountain Valley Conference foe East Wilkes, 42-30.
Edwin Alvarenga, Storm Long, Tyler Hailey, Isaac McMillan, Weston Edwards, Tyler Mitchell and Tanner Couch notched victories to power the Falcons.
Forbush hung tough before falling to defending MVAC champion Wilkes Central, 56-21.
Long, Hailey, McMillan and Mitchell were victorious, recording three pins between them.
Against a veteran 3A Mount Tabor squad, the Falcons only managed three individual wins in a 54-29 defeat. Long, Hailey and McMillan remained perfect in the tournament, earning wins in their respective weight class, including a tech fall for McMillan at 152.
Forbush struggled against another East Forsyth, another 3A club, in the final dual match of the tournament, falling 51-24.
Alvarenga, Long and Hailey pinned their opponents, while Josue Aguilar and Mitchell battled for decision triumphs to round out the scoring for the Falcons.
Long, a returning fourth-place medalist at state, sits at 19-1 on the season, with his lone defeat coming against South Stokes’ Morgan Bagley (8-6 decision).
McMillan boasts a 24-1 mark on the year, losing only to Devin Mims of East Forsyth last weekend, ending a 21-match win streak to open the year.
