BOONVILLE — The Rams scored early and often Friday night.
Starmount scored five first-half touchdowns en route to a convincing 55-7 victory over visiting East Wilkes in Boonville.
The Rams rolled up 400 rushing yards on the night, despite not having a single 100-yard rusher. Will Simpson posted a team-high 84 yards on the ground on just nine carries (9.33 yards per carry) with two touchdowns, while Zach Freed added 48 yards and two scores.
Joe Walker tallied 77 rushing yards and a touchdown, while John Johnson tacked on 76 yards. Trey Bryant and Ken Kelly also found paydirt to lead Starmount.
Freed added a 19-yard touchdown pass to Gunner Cass on his only throw of the night to round out the scoring.
Defensively, the Rams forced six turnovers in a dominating effort.
Bryant scooped up a pair of fumbles, while Tyler Albritton, Austin Baucom and Josh Houser each recovered a loose ball. Austin Holcomb also picked off a pass.
East’s Zach West threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Omar Everette late in the fourth quarter to prevent a Starmount shutout.
The Rams rebounded from last week’s loss to North Wilkes with the rout, moving into a second-place tie with the Vikings at 4-1 in Mountain Valley Conference action. The Cardinals fell to 0-9 on the year and 0-5 in league play.
Starmount can shake up the conference standings Friday in with a Week 11 showdown against surprising front-runner Ashe County (6-3, 5-0). The Huskies knocked off North Wilkes, 34-20, Friday in the final battle of unbeaten squads.
East Wilkes hosts Wilkes Central on Senior Night.
