YADKINVILLE — On Thursday, a budget hearing was held to finalize the 2014-2015 fiscal year budget for Yadkin County.
Representatives from several county organizations spoke at the hearing including, Yadkin County School Superintendent Dr. Todd Martin, Yadkin County Rescue Squad Chief Jamie Dodge, Sheriff Ricky Oliver, Boonville Fire Chief Danny Smith, Yadkinville Fire Chief Bryan Southard, Assistant Fire Chief Bart Bell of the West Yadkin Fire Department and Wayne Matthews representing the library and Richmond Hill Law School.
The final budget was approved at the close of the hearing with a few changes including adding $30,000 to the Yadkin County Schools’ budget and changing the proposed property tax rate from $o.659 per $100 to $0.66. The tax rate for the 2013-2014 fiscal was $0.679.
A public hearing was held at Monday’s regular meeting of the board of commissioners regarding the financing for the new Yadkin Valley Agricultural Center that is slated to become a part of the Surry Community College Yadkin Center campus. No speakers came forward at the hearing.
Also at Monday’s meeting, the commissioners approved a financing bid from BB&T to fund the construction of the new agriculture building. Of the three banks that submitted bids, BB&T had the lowest interest rate at 2.28 percent. Following approval of the financing bid, commissioners also approved the project ordinance which will allow for expenditure of funds to complete the Yadkin Valley Agricultural Center project.
A request from Surry Community College for $15,000 also was approved to cover the costs of moving three mobile units at the SCC Yadkin Center location in order to accommodate the construction of the new agricultural center.
The board also approved an amendment that would include an additional $12,630 to upgrade the Jonesville radio tower as part of an ongoing county project to update the emergency radio communications systems.
On June 24 at 7:30 p.m., the Yadkin County commissioners will hold a public meeting at Myers Auction House, located at 6236 Old U.S. Hwy 421 in East Bend, to answer questions and hear concerns from East Bend residents about the new waterline which is slated for construction. The commissioners will hold a joint meeting with the Yadkin County Board of Education at 6 p.m. on June 30 at school administration building in Yadkinville.
