YADKINVILLE — On Monday, the Yadkin County School Board took action by appointing Mike McCann at Starmount High School to assistant principal.
McCann is no newcomer to Starmount. He’s been with the school since 1998.
“I’ve been here for 16 years and haven’t dreaded one day of it. The students, the facility, the community has been great. I can’t imagine life any other way,” said a gleeful McCann.
McCann teaches U.S. history and physical education.
“We all have people who help others. I played sports in high school, too. Around here, you have coaches who make a difference in people’s lives,” he said.
McCann was thankful to Buzz Sims, a former coach at Wilkes Central who helped connect McCann to his first coaching opportunity. McCann joined football coach Richard Grissom of Elkin High School from 1994 to 1997. In the summer of 1998, McCann shifted to Starmount, a school he said is now home.
In other news, school improvement plans were approved for each school in Yadkin County.
“Each of our 14 schools submitted plans to the BOE for approval,” said Myra Cox, chief academic officer for Yadkin County Schools. Cox informed commissioners that those plans were developed by a school improvement team within each school consisting of academic and safety components.
“The plans are first developed and approved by the entire staff of each school,” said Cox.
According to Cox, the teams analyzed test data of each school and pinpointed opportunities for improvement. Action steps were created to serve as primary strategies to help meet the goals of each school.
“Moving forward, each school will review its progress in the end of January and May,” said Cox.
School board members unanimously approved the school improvement plans.
The board also approved the high school curriculum guide, a feature used by students to help them select classes.
