Students can create beautiful Christmas presents or unique keepsakes in a stained glass course that will be offered by Surry Community College this fall.
A 30-year veteran in the art of stained glass, Debbie Post will lead novices and intermediate students through the creative process from start to finish. Students do not need prior knowledge of stained glass, only a desire to create and learn.
“Glass is beautiful. There are so many colors, and there are so many different things you can make,” Post said. “I do a lot of great gifts - large and small. I like practical projects such as candles, candle holders, lanterns, mosaic art panels, flowerpots, birdhouses and ornaments. I also love to do pet memorials and mosaic stones. Glass is always fun.”
Post studied stained glass and blown glass at Western Carolina University. She serves as Information Technology Director for the City of Mount Airy and does stained glass as a hobby.
Students can start new projects in class or bring current projects if they need assistance.
“We always just try to have fun,” Post said. “I have had students from 18 years to 81. It’s a fun opportunity to do with a group of friends or individually.”
Post teaches the copper foil technique and is also experienced with the traditional stained glass treatments.
The Stained Glass course will be held at the Center for Public Safety located at 1220 State St. in Mount Airy, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 17, and ending Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Tuition is $66. Online registration is available at www.surry.edu. For more information and a supply list, call (336) 386-3229.
