Emmitte Winslow moved to Yadkin County in 1961 with his family. He’s still here over 50 years later, working and contributing to the place he’s called home since his senior year in high school.

Winslow moved here when his father began pastoring at Harmony Grove Friends Church, just before Emmitte’s senior year in high school.

Following his graduation from Yadkinville High School he attended Guilford College, majoring in special studies in accounting.

He took a job in 1966 in Winston-Salem working for Briggs-Shaffner Company’s accounting department.

The company has two plants: one in Simpsonville, S.C., and another in Yadkinville along Highway 601 toward Mocksville.

Briggs-Shaffner manufactures textile beams that are used in the textile making process. The beams are like large spools that are used to process fibers and weave fabric and cloth.

Now they also buy, sell and trade used beams, used machinery, and do metal recycling.

Winslow began working for the company in the accounting department. After several corporate ownership changes the company finally settled with a new president and CEO - Winslow.

He has held the top position since 1990 when he acquired the company.

Ten years ago the company downsized due to the textile industry, moving the machining shop to Yadkinville where it is currently. Winslow’s office is located in the machining shop.

Winslow is married to his high school sweetheart Carol and has three sons. Each son works for the company in a different capacity.

Winslow said he also had three great daughters-in-law and seven wonderful grandchildren.

Emmitte is a member of the Yadkinville United Methodist Church and is currently chairperson of the finance committee.

He served as a Yadkin County Board of Education commissioner for eight years and as the chairman for three. He stays involved in as many community activities as he can.

He was the president of the Yadkinville Youth Recreation summer recreation program, having been involved in the program for roughly 20 years. He coached little league baseball for 17 years and youth basketball for 15 years.

For 15 years he was the football announcer for the Yadkinville Pee Wee and Midget football teams.

Many Forbush fans likely remember his deep voice as the announcer for the Falcons football program. Winslow said he really enjoyed announcing when he was younger.

When not in the office running the company Winslow likes to head out of state to his relaxation spot, Myrtle Beach, S.C. He enjoys walking on the sand and just sitting watching the ocean.

Emmitte and Carol Winslow will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in December.
