Courtney Elementary was honored for the 2013-14 school year as a top 10 percent Title I Reward school.
The school was one of 174 schools in the state to receive the ranking, and the only one in Yadkin County to be honored.
Courtney also received the award in 2012-13.
Only Title I schools - those that receive funding based on the number of low-income children eligible for free or reduced lunches in enrollment - were the candidates for the award.
The schools were judged on one of two are categories: progress or performance.
The highest-performing school is a school that has the highest absolute performance over a number of years for all subgroups, including the all students group, on statewide assessments.
The high-progress school is one that that has made the most progress in improving the performance of the all students group over a number of years on statewide assessments.
Courtney was judged on the performance scale.
Those that placed in the top ten were named Reward schools.
From these schools, two will be selected to represent North Carolina in the national Title I Distinguished Schools Program - one from each category.
Each school is invited to submit a portfolio that highlights the best practices that helped the school succeed. Officials will review the portfolios and do on-site reviews to determine which schools represent the state.
According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, assessment data from the 2011-12 school year and the two previous years was used to determine which Title I schools were among the top ten percent.
In a press release from the NC DPI, State Superintendent June Atkinson said, “It is imperative that we challenge all students to their highest academic potential, no matter what personal circumstances they may bring to the classroom. Educators at these schools show us that given the right tools, they can help students meet their academic goals.”
According to the NC DPI press release, Title I is the largest federal education funding program for schools. Its aim is to help students who are behind academically or at risk of falling behind.
