The Sauras and the Vikings kept the score tight in the first quarter on Friday night at South Stokes High School. But, the Sauras began to pull away with the win starting in the second quarter and finished the night with a 24-14 win, over their county rival.

South Stokes quickly moved up the field on some running plays to start the game. Quarterback J.J. Davis fired off a 30-yard pass to Daniel Welch for the first touchdown of the game. Then, Davis ran it into the Viking endzone for a 2-point conversion, which put the Sauras up 8-0 to start the game.

The Vikings had a good return on the ball and Blake Williams helped to move the ball up the field on some short carries. With about four minutes left in the first, Williams pushed in for a touchdown. After a good kick by Andrew Lankford, the score was 8-7 - Vikings trail by one.

In the second quarter, Sauras Jacquan Martin and Davis combined on back-to-back running plays, which pushed the team far up the field. Martin went on a 25-yard run and Davis followed with a 20-yard run, which brought the team within 27 yards of goal. A couple of plays later, Martin ran the ball in for the touchdown. Then, Davis punched in another 2-point conversion.

At halftime, the Sauras were in the lead 16-7.

The Sauras held off the Vikings offense in the third quarter. North Stokes pushed to within 30 yards of goal to start the quarter, but the team’s offense could not seal the deal.

South Stokes struck again midway through the third quarter, when Martin picked up the ball and dropped back for a few yards before going on a 40-yard touchdown run. Once again, Davis found a hole and picked up a 2-point conversion, which put the Sauras up 24-7.

Although the Vikings found themselves trailing to start the final quarter, they did not let up. The Vikings defense held true and forced the Sauras to turn the ball over on downs at the start of the fourth.

Vikings Quarterback John-Luke Charleville threw a 10-yard pass to Jonah Slate at the beginning of the fourth. After another short pass to Slate, the Vikings had 16 yards to go. Then, they pushed to within five yards of goal. On the next play, Williams carried the ball in for the team’s second and final touchdown of the game, which brought the score to 24-14.

The Vikings had a short time with the ball later on in the fourth, but couldn’t make their way down the field to tighten the score.

The Sauras walked away with the win on Friday night 24-14.

Sauras Coach Jonathan Frasher said that his team played hard. He said that his team is young and still has some things to learn, but the team is making progress.

“We’re getting better every week,” Frasher said.

West Stokes

In other news, West Stokes beat McMichael 41-7 in an away game at McMichael High School. The Wildcats picked up a touchdown in the first quarter and did not let up until they finished the game with the win. The team’s defense held McMichael to just one touchdown in the entire game, which wasn’t scored until the fourth quarter.
