WILKESBORO — There is an old abandoned farm that sits on a hillside in the North Carolina Foothills.
At a glance it looks like any ordinary farm in rural North Carolina. But looks can be deceiving.
The Hillside Horror farm has been attracting thrill seekers to Wilkesboro for the last three years. The attraction is a trail through woods, an old chicken house and an old hay barn to the farmhouse.
Along the way actors in various Halloween costumes provide “up in your face scary” entertainment, according to the event’s website.
A hay wagon takes visitors into the woods and gets the evening started off in a spooky way. There is also a corn maze that lets the adventurous wander through the tall stalks in the dark.
Actors roam through the corn as well.
Each year the event is tweaked to offer visitors something new.
Now in its fourth year, Hillside has decided to change up the format in a big way for 2013.
This year the event has worked with local farmers to grow the corn even higher and thicker than the previous years, thanks in part to this year’s rainy summer.
The organizers of the event have expanded the haunted trail to nearly double its previous length, making the stop even more popular in 2013.
Each year’s increased popularity has allowed the event to hold auditions for performers, meaning the actors are getting better and scarier this year, too.
A new team of managers is also a part of Hillside this year, bringing a collective experience of many years in the haunting industry.
Visitors can visit the farm every Friday and Saturday in October, Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and 2. The event opens at 8 p.m. each night and lasts until the last person leaves.
Tickets are $10 per person and $7 for children 10 and younger.
A Hillside VIP Pass runs $15 and offers little to no wait. Even on busy nights the holder is bumped to the front of the line and avoids the wait periods.
Only a limited number of VIP passes are sold nightly.
Groups of 20 or more receive their own rate but must book in advance.
Drinks and snacks are available on site.
Due to the remoteness of the event, the organizers only accept cash. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Davis Memorial Baptist Church and Champion Volunteer Fire Department.
