Two men and one juvenile were arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty charges after the Stokes County Humane Society received a complaint regarding alleged animal cruelty after an icident on Kallam Farm Road in the Sandy Ridge Community.
Jose Martinez Lopez and Jonathan Mason Evans, both of Sandy Ridge, were arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty charges. A juvenile was also taken into custody after the investigation, but the name cannot be released due to age.
The Stokes County Humane Society received the complaint on September 6, involving witnesses who saw a dog being dragged behind a vehicle.
Stokes County Animal Cruelty Investigator Mona Triplett responded to the complaint and discovered a deseased mixed breed canine. After an animal autopsy was performed by Dr. Debbie Cowan of the Animal Hospital of Walnut Cove, it was determined that the cause of the dog’s death was strangulation and blunt force trauma, which appeared consistant with the witnesses’ accounts.
The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office and the Stokes County Animal Control Department assisted the Stokes County Humane Society with the investigation that led to the arrests of the three individuals.
Lopez is held on a $10,000 secured bond and Evans has a $1,500 secured bond. The court date is set for September 25.
