YADKINVILLE — The incumbent of a controversial three-way race for the N.C. State Senate seat (District 31) was victorious over two insurgent candidates.

Longtime Republican political figure Joyce Krawiec of Winston-Salem was tapped to replace Pete Brunstetter in the state Senate. She was appointed on Jan. 10.

Brunstetter, a four-term Republican and one of the Senate’s key budget-writers, resigned in late 2013 to take a job as executive vice president and chief legal officer of Novant Health.

The district covers Yadkin and Forsyth counties.

Controversy erupted in the race on Saturday after a local media outlet reported Republican candidate Steve Wiles alleged past association with a defunct Winston-Salem gay bar.

According to the N.C. State Board of Elections, the votes were tallied and the unofficial results are:

• Joyce Krawiec — 7,908 — 43.81 percent

• Dempsey Brewer — 5,181 — 28.70 percent

• Steve Wiles — 4,962 — 27.49 percent

Candidate Steve Wiles said the people have decided and he’ll support Krawiec through the November election.
