DOBSON — Members of the Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Surry Community College attended NerdNation 2016, an international PTK convention at National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, April 7-10.

Chapter officers President Madaline Jones of East Bend, Vice President Kayla Holleman and Student Government Association Liaison Jameire Bryant, both of Jonesville, and Secretary Mackenzie Ammann of Mount Airy were accompanied by advisors Kennette Lawrence Thomas and Sarah Wright, both instructors at SCC.

Thomas and PTK headquarters staff member Mia Ramos-Shirley gave an encore presentation entitled, “New Advisors/Officers: Get Organized with the Five Star Plan” after it garnered exemplary feedback during the previous year’s convention. Wright and the local chapter officers assisted with a subsequent question-and-answer session with approximately 75 in attendance. The club was also able to explore nearby Washington, D.C., while traveling. Previously, the chapter attended annual conventions in San Antonio, Nashville, San Jose, and Orlando.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, Peru, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 130,000 students inducted annually.
