DOBSON — John Britt, a potter from Penland and author of two books on glazes, conducted a workshop at Surry Community College in February. The event was sponsored by the SCC Cultural Diversity Committee and was free and open to the public. Around 25 potters and ceramic sculptors from as far away as Johnson City, Tennessee; Raleigh; and Meadows of Dan, Virgnia, attended as well as several of the college’s ceramics students.

The focus of the workshop was on glazes — content, effects and application. Glazes are the glass-like coating on the surface of ceramic art. The purpose of the workshop was to provide regional potters an opportunity to engage with one of most knowledgeable potters in the country concerning glazes. The audience was able to ask questions about problems they have with certain glazes. They also learned about various effects artists can get from glazes.

Surry offers an Associate in Fine Arts degree. Courses include photography, ceramics, painting and drawing. More information is available at www.surry.edu or through Student Services at 336-386-3264.
