Surry Community offering free workshops to assist unemployed and underemployed


DOBSON — Surry Community College will be offering the following free workshops for unemployed and underemployed workers. No advanced registration is required.

Stress Management, Budgeting on Less and Surviving a Layoff will be offered on April 5, from 1 to 4 at the Surry County Workforce Center (Employment Office), 541 West Pine Street, Mount Airy; and on April 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin. Participants will learn effective ways to cope with stress to become more productive and reduce burnout. Students will also be informed on how to budget on less and survive a layoff in four steps.

Sell Yourself in a Job Interview will be offered on April 5 from 10 a.m. to noon and on March 29 from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Surry County Workforce Center (Employment Office), 541 West Pine Street, Mount Airy. Participants will learn how to answer tough interview questions and most frequently asked interview questions in order to make a great impression during the interview.

Networking Your Way to Success, Dress for Success With Career Gear will be offered Tuesday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge Street, Elkin and on April 12 from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Surry County Workforce Center (Employment Office), 541 West Pine Street, Mount Airy. Participants will learn important ways of networking with friends, relatives, acquaintances, direct employer contacts, and job information web sites to tap into the hidden job market. Participants will also master the skill of dressing for success and improving their total image.

Totally Responsible Person Program: Part 1: Choosing to take charge and stay positive will be held Thursday, April 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge Street, Elkin. This is the first class in a three-part series. A SCC certificate will be awarded after all sessions are completed.

Make a Great Impression With Your Resume will be offered Tuesday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge Street, Elkin and on Tuesday, April 19 from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Surry County Workforce Center (Employment Office), 541 West Pine Street, Mount Airy.

Participants will learn resume design and layout tips. Attendees are welcome to bring in their existing resume for feedback. Instructors can also help individuals develop a resume if they do not have one.

Moving Forward-Career Information will be offered April 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge Street, Elkin and on April 26, from 1 to 4 at the Surry County Workforce Center (Employment Office), 541 West Pine Street, Mount Airy. Take the CAREER KEY and unlock the mystery to identify jobs most likely to satisfy you. Learn how to identify sources of career information. Help will be provided identifying training needs and locations. Information about the Career Readiness Certification will be provided.

Totally Responsible Person Program: Part 2: Becoming the totally responsible person will be held Thursday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge Street, Elkin. This is the second class in a three-part series. A SCC certificate will be awarded after all sessions are completed.

Totally Responsible Person Program: Part 3: Your Action Plan of Being the Best You will be held Thursday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge Street, Elkin. This is the third class in a three-part series. A SCC certificate will be awarded after all sessions are completed.

Your Personality and Job Preferences will be offered on both April 26 and April 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge Street, Elkin. Students will complete the Myers Briggs Type Personality Profile and identify their personality types to find out which career or job best suits them.

Work Ethics and Job Employer Expectations will be held Thursday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge Street, Elkin. Learn what is expected in today’s workplace to be successful on the job. Make yourself promotable.
